Auto Rustproofing-Undercoating
The fact is, a new vehicle is subjected to thousands of spot welds and numerous bends and folds during production.
This process damages the pre-coated metal, allowing exposure to the corrosion process. Besides cosmetic damage, corrosion also weakens a vehicle’s structural integrity.
The introduction of liquid Road brine has made the roads safe to travel but has a toxic corrosive effect on your automobiles undercarriage. Because the solution is liquid it will now creep into nooks and crannies that rocksalt couldn’t.
These areas are prone to hold moisture and our unprotected. Lawsuits have been filed by major common carriers against states using these products claiming that they are prematurely corroding their vehicles undercarriage. Automobile rust proofing and undercoating has never been more important. Would you like to learn more on this subject? Click here

Tuesday, we mentioned Kevin Read, a native of Canada and 20-year veteran of the auto body and paint industry. Kevin has a “little blue car” (Chevrolet Aveo) he’s apparently very proud of, partly because he’s had it since 2006 and it doesn’t have so much as a spot of rust. That’s because once a year, Kevin takes his car apart, sprays it with two cans of rustproofing and puts it back together again. He doesn’t say how long the project takes him, but there’s no way this could be a quick job, even for him. And with all his experience and intimate familiarity with the obscure parts of his car, it probably takes him a lot less time than it would take most owners. In a blog post entitled “How to Rust Proof Your Car,” he spells out the whole job. Here’s a partial list of what he goes through in preparation for the annual auto rustproofing Undercoating project:
- Pulls up the scuff plates from under the doors
- Takes the grille off
- Takes the headlights out
- Takes the wheels off (although, from the photos, it appears he may mean just the tires and rims)
The reason for all this disassembly is to gain access to the insides of the body panels, where he sprays the lowest three inches or so, along with any seams. In his Chevy Aveo, he’s able to get access to every place he needs to spray the auto rustproofing undercoating, because there are access holes (sometimes filled with rubber plugs, sometimes open) and drain holes that lead to all the crucial rust-prone areas. He makes use of the ‘straw’ or “directional spray tube” that comes with the rustproofing can, sticking into the holes and aiming toward where he needs the product to be. But even Kevin finds it necessary to “get creative” in some spots:
The rear quarter panels can be a bit tricky, depending on the vehicle. On the little blue car (Chevy Aveo and Pontiac Wave) it is difficult to get material into the quarter panel dog leg section. This is a rust-prone area on a lot of vehicles, and without drilling holes we need to get creative. The front section of the rear quarter panel is called the “dog leg”. It’s a double walled panel, and a prime area for rust. So with the little blue car we have to partially remove the interior trim panel to gain access to the structure on the inside. On the inside, you find access holes where you can spray the product. Still difficult, so again you want to get a lot of it in there. Better too much than not enough, and because the oil creeps, it will end up where it needs to be if you get enough of it in there.
Keven doesn’t mention why, with so many holes already drilled into his little blue car at the factory, he has an objection to drilling a few more, rather than take his car apart. But he’s clearly an enthusiast, with the time and dedication to do the job, like a top athlete, according to a strict set of rules. And like in sports, maybe the reason behind the rules isn’t as important as the fact that he can perform the feat. If this is a feat you’d like to perform with your own vehicle, Kevin’s post gives clear instructions, complete with lots of photos.
