Simply put, the metal in your car acts as both an anode and a cathode, while water (from rain, puddles, humidity, etc) is the electrolyte. It’s important to remember, however, that water alone is a poor carrier of electrons. What really does the job well is salt, which is why cars exposed to road salt and brine will accelerate the process considerably.
